P&O Cruises, Cruise the Mediterranean Like Never Before
The Med and Canaries chapter of the same P&O platform, shot in Cádiz with the same director a year after the fjords.
The Challenge
Everything in frame is frozen, which is the opposite of what an FPV rig is for. With nothing moving, the camera move carries the whole piece: it sets the pace, the direction and the exact point where it has to let go. And that point is a match cut to a handheld camera, so the drone's last frame has to meet the first frame of a different camera on a different support: same height, same angle, same speed, same distance to the people. A cut like that forgives nothing, because there is no background movement to hide the join.
Our Approach
The shot was designed backwards from the cut: first the handheld entry was locked, then the flight was tuned to arrive at that point with the same inertia, not the other way round. Speed came down to that of a person walking, because that is what it would be compared against, and the approach was rehearsed with the cast already placed and still, which is the only way to check the real distance the aircraft passes at. It was not the first time the unit handed a shot to another camera with no visible cut: the same problem, solved in reverse, is in the Niantic film, where the FPV rig leaves an interior and meets a crane at street level.
