Half the campaign in the centre of Granada, one of the most visited places in Spain, and half up in Sierra Nevada inside a protected natural park. Two sets of rules, two permit processes built from scratch.

In the snow the batteries travelled in heaters and only came out to fly, so flight time stayed predictable in the cold. In the city, a small crew was the advantage: an agreed working area and short windows, without closing streets.

The Challenge

One campaign, two regimes. Half of it was shot in the centre of Granada, one of the most visited places in Spain, and the other half up in Sierra Nevada, inside a protected natural park. A city and a national park do not share a single rule about flying, so the permits had to be built twice, from scratch, along two separate processes. On the mountain the cold was the second problem: below a certain temperature a battery loses efficiency, and with it flight time, exactly when the light is shortest.

Our Approach

The two permit processes were run as two separate jobs rather than one, because the natural park answers to different criteria than the city does, and treating them as the same request is how a shoot day gets lost. In the snow the batteries travelled in heaters and only came out to fly, which keeps the usable flight time predictable instead of shrinking with every take. In the centre of Granada the small crew turned into the advantage: a reduced unit can agree a working area with the city and work inside it in short windows, without closing streets that belong to everyone else.
