Appleton Estate's Land on the Extraordinary sent the camera through Jamaican rivers, waterfalls and jungle after a hummingbird created in post.

For Solab, Andriu FPV treated the unseen bird as a real performer—defining its speed, pauses and direction before flying close enough to vegetation and water for the physical movement to make the later VFX feel alive.

The Challenge

The drone travelled through the Appleton Estate, rivers, waterfalls and dense Jamaican jungle while following an imaginary hummingbird that would be added in post. The flight frequently skimmed vegetation and water, including sections where leaves were physically cut by the propellers above a river from which the drone could not be recovered. Humidity, branches and remote access made the environment as demanding as the VFX choreography.

Our Approach

We imagined the hummingbird as a real performer, defining its speed, changes of direction and pauses before designing the camera response. Local exploration helped identify routes that felt wild but remained achievable, while lens choice controlled whether the camera felt like the bird itself or a companion following it. The final integration worked because the physical flight already contained believable animal-like behaviour.
